Medium Rare

In summer 2012 the Vocal Constructivists introduced a programme of pieces by living four American composers:

The first performance of Medium Rare, given in V22 Summer Club, on July 1, 2012, featured two world premieres (Paula Matthusen’s In words of one syllable and Ron Kuivila’s A city of no allusions), the UK premiere of Mark Applebaum’s Medium, and the first vocal-only performance of Anthony Braxton’s Falling River musics. All of these pieces were composed using idiosyncratic symbols, glyphs, and visual design, rather than traditional musical notation. Theatrical elements, metronomes, and coffee tins also featured.

Jane Alden, director of the Vocal Constructivists, said: ‘We are honoured to be able to perform adventurous, experimental scores in a building like the V22 Workspace. The industrial history of the old biscuit factory provides the perfect backdrop for these whimsical, provocative, and abstract works by four generations of American composers’.

This event was part of SOUND//SPACE, a three month programme of audiocentric events curated by SoundFjord for V22 Summer Club.
